King Louis XVI had an interest in geography, and the minister of the Navy, de Castries, had no problem convincing him to send, in this time of peace, a scientific expedition into the last oceans with parts still unexplored or to islands that appeared only hazily on maps. For such an expedition it was necessary to have clear objectives, two ships, a well-thought-out plan, and a scientific team on board.
