The Crew
The highest-quality crew members are chosen not only for their competence but also for their ability to tolerate a very long journey. From this point of view, it seems that Bretons would be the best choice. The crew composition for each of the ships is essentially the following: 6 officers and 4 midshipmen or equivalent; some 10 scientists or technicians; six petty officers and about ten “supernumeraries,” who are generally specialists assigned to, in particular, the second surgeon. Included also are about 10 technicians: carpenters, caulkers, sailmakers; 40 seamen: riggers, helmsmen, ordinary sailors; and 6 servants. On the military level, there would be about 20 gunners and fusiliers of different ranks. In all, the crew would number about 110 persons per ship.
